Waitangi events get funds

A three-day Waitangi festival in Northland featuring 30 waka, more than 300 kaihoe (rowers) a dawn karakia, sports events, a church service and a sunset ceremony. It is one of 77 events receiving funding announced by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund. A total of $299,700 was approved. The full list of events can be viewed on the website at www.mch.govt.nz.

Successful applicants are: Waitangi Day Commemorations Committee $114,000 for the Wai-tangi Day event with 30 waka, dawn karakia, sports events, 21 gun salute and a sunset ceremony.

Waitangi National Trust $25,000 for a three-day festival at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds featuring music, arts, crafts, parades, sports and cultural performances.

Baylys Beach Society Incorporated $300 for a family day at Baylys beach with food stalls, activities and competitions.

Te Hana Community Development Charitable Trust $1000 for a powhiri and church service followed by speeches, entertainment and an inaugural Te Hana Waitangi Day Rugby Tournament.

E-Hoe Waka Education Trust $5000 for a waka voyage, hikoi and celebrations including a re-enactment of the signing of the treaty and an open forum on treaty issues.

Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua $1000 for a family picnic with local performers, kapa haka and hip hop dancers.

Tornado Youth Community Trust $500 for a youth camp focused on group activities and learning about the treaty.

Arts Promotion Trust (Northland) $1000 for a music and dance programme, arts demonstrations and a treaty information tent.

Tiaki Whakapapa $500 for a lunch and wananga promoting understanding of the treaty.
